NATIONAL Self-Care
networks

SCTG National Self-Care Networks contributes to building a coordinated, diverse, and influential self-care movement that is mobilized around common goals and messaging to advance self-care at the national and subnational levels.

NSNs pursue specific policy and advocacy priorities and, in collaboration
with the global SCTG, develop learning mechanisms around the extent to which national self-care guidelines promote scale-up of quality, affordable self-care for those in need.

NSNs prioritize community sensitization on self-care and social
accountability mechanisms to ensure that top-down policy and guidelines
changes take root at the individual and community level.

NSNs also engage grassroots networks and communities in mobilizing
demand and social accountability for self-care policies and programs
in these countries.

CURRENT
network

The SCTG’s current National Self-Care Networks are leading the charge on building the self-care
advocacy movement in the following countries:

National Self-Care Network nigeria

The Nigeria national self-care network (NSN), initially the Self-Care Subcommittee, was established in 2019. In 2023, the subcommittee was split into two subcommittees – the Self-Care Coordination Committee and the Self-Care Advocacy Network – to advance self-care policies at national and subnational levels. White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria (WRAN) leads the self-care advocacy efforts of the network at the national level and supports in convening the network.

OUR
PRESENCE

Across SCTG focus countries, our National Self-Care Networks (NSN) lead a consultative process
to define a coordinated advocacy strategy for self-care, which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Development of consolidated national self-care guidelines or integrating principles and practices of self-care into existing policies/guidelines.
  • Engage target policymakers and influencers in supporting self-care and instituting self-care policies and financing at national and subnational levels.
  • Increasing demand and accountability for self-care among target communities and constituencies, particularly engagement with broader advocacy opportunities for family planning, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and bodily autonomy.

ABOUT
WRA NIGERIA

White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) Nigeria was formed in 2009 to give a voice to the women most at risk of dying in childbirth. Their mission is to activate a people-led movement for reproductive, maternal, and newborn health. Driven by a deep passion and commitment, WRA Nigeria empowers citizens to recognize their rights to health and to hold elected leadership and government accountable for commitments made to maternal and newborn health.

Key
Achievements

The National Self-Care Guideline for Sexual, Reproductive and Maternal Health was launched by the Federal Ministry of Health in April 2023 and has been disseminated in 24 states, including Lagos, Borno and Federal Capital Territory. Self-care was included in the Costed Annual Operation Plan for Niger State in 2022, and the implementation plans of Adamawa, Kebbi, Yola, Borno and Bayelsa.

WRAN and NSN partners developed the National Demand Generation/SBC Strategy for Self-Care and the self-care framework in 2022, using the ELWG/Breakthrough Action SBC Self-Care Framework. The strategy was launched by the Federal Ministry of Health in 2023 and has been disseminated in three states.

The M&E Framework for Self-Care when completed and approved, will be added as an addendum to National Guidelines, aligning with global self-care reporting standards developed by the SCTG Evidence & Learning Working Group.

The FMOH has established two sub-committees to advance self-care policies at national and sub-national levels in Nigeria – the Self-Care Coordination Committee and the Self-Care Advocacy Network. These committees replace the Self-Care Subcommittee that led the drafting of the guidelines.
In collaboration with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), WRAN disseminated the National Self-Care Guidelines and the Demand Generation Framework in these settings. In Borno State, WRAN/IRC conducted an orientation of the National Guideline with stakeholders and developed a state rollout strategy and Advocacy Strategic Plan. WRAN also secured commitment from State leadership to advance self-care.
